Shoulder impingement occurs when tendons within the shoulder joint are compressed and become irritated. Symptoms of impingement include shoulder stiffness, weakness, and pain.
Shoulder pain can often be aggravated by reaching overhead or behind the back. The shoulder is a unique ball-and-socket joint. lt is important that the ball component stays centered within the socket during shoulder movement, otherwise impingement of the tendons can occur. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that work together to keep the ball component centered within the socket.
lmpingement can occur when these muscles lack adequate endurance and control. Healthy movement in the shoulder joint is dependent on good movement of the shoulder blade and upper back. At Okotoks Physical Therapy, we can determine what factors are contributing to your shoulder pain. We use techniques such as hands-on therapy, needling, and taping to reduce pain, then set up a home exercise program to improve shoulder movement. Call to book your appointment 403-938-2644.
