Injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) are eligible for physiotherapy treatments funded by your vehicle insurance. A doctor’s referral is not required to access physiotherapy. A claim must be opened with the insurance provider as soon as possible following the motor vehicle accident and an AB-1 form must be completed by the client. We see patients up to 90 days from the day of the accident and beyond if approved by their insurance company. In order to be eligible for direct billing, individuals must follow the procedure for coverage in Alberta.
During the initial physiotherapy appointment, the physiotherapist will ask a variety of questions. These questions allow our therapists to gather information regarding the type of injury, symptoms, current activity levels, and activity the client is aiming to resume. The therapist will then complete a physical assessment. This includes observations of movement such as walking, balance, specific joint movements, and muscle strength.
After the initial physiotherapy assessment, the therapist will send an AB-2 report to the insurance provider. The number of funded treatments depends on the type and severity of the injury and typically ranges from 10 to 21 visits. The therapist will discuss a treatment plan with the client and recommend the number of physiotherapy sessions that should be scheduled each week.
